It's really an out-of-the-way, great experience to come here; many consider this lovely monastery to be the most significant religious structure in Singapore. Almost crammed next to a huge HDB (housing development board) apartment complex, this Buddhist/Confucian monastery conists of several buildings and a lovely, serene courtyard and garden. It's not uncommon to see saffron-robed-monks quietly padding down the corridors. Right next to this monastery is a bustling temple, alive with people and the scents of incense. One of the main architectural features: gorgeous, ornate red doors that span the length of a long hallway. For something really unique: call Chan, who has a M.A. from the London School of Economics. On weekends he gives serious--but accessible--tours of this monastery. His web site: http://www.culturalcompass.org/
