Laughing Bird Caye National Park

Intro to Laughing Bird Caye National Park Edit Section - Placencia Natural Site : Laughing Bird Caye National Park

The name alone entices, and the reality is no less enchanting. Laughing Bird Caye is a tiny, skinny strip of sand dotted with palm trees, picnic tables, and one two-story house weathered and brined by the sea along what's known as the inner reef; it's not quite the barrier reef, which is a good bit beyond this one, but is certainly just as much worth the trip. Almost all of the outfitters and tour guide shops in Placencia go here frequently, so it's easy to jump on a boat and receive snorkeling/dive equipment, the boat ride, a fresh-cooked Belizean picnic lunch, and the snorkeling/dive experience itself for about $50-70 US. It's not dirt cheap, but definitely worth it nonetheless. Look out for the small yet rather menacing-looking lemon sharks, who are so used to eating the chicken scraps the snorkel and dive guides throw to them every day that they'll come right up to the beach, inches from your very toes.
