Monuments and Historical Sites:

Arc de Triomphe

Intro to Arc de Triomphe Edit Section - Paris Monuments and Historical Sites : Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe rises from the Place Charles de Gaulle at the western end of the Champs-Elysees, right in the heart of Paris. In fact, it really does feel that way when you climb the narrow staircase to the top and peer over the iron grate at the city below: the Arc de Triomphe stands in the center of what's known as L'Etoile, or the star (before it was called Place Charles de Gaulle, it was Place de L'Etoile), due to the twelve great Haussmanian boulevards stretching out in all directions from the curving road that encircles it. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, the monument is now one of the most well-known French icons. Those set on hitting the highlights of Paris shouldn’t miss the Arc -- the view from the top is spectacular, a small exhibition hall features photographs and other artifacts from its history, and on the stones below flickers the eternal flame of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, interred in 1920 to commemorate those killed in World War I.
