Chateau de Versailles

Intro to Chateau de Versailles Edit Section - Paris Museum : Chateau de Versailles

The Chateau de Versailles, not to be confused with the city of Versailles, is a stunning, sprawling palace within this verdant Parisian suburb. As it's one of the top tourist attractions in the area, however, it's simple to get there from the city center by bus or train.  Transformed by Louis XIV from a hunting lodge to a castle circa 1669 and once the home of King Louis XVI and his infamous wife, Marie Antoinette (of "let-them-eat-cake" fame), Versailles represents the inordinate opulence of the pre-revolution monarchy. You'll understand why the poverty-stricken populace would have rioted when you wander the grandiose corridors, including the shimmering Hall of Mirrors, marble statues, gilded furniture, and large paintings and portraits, and then step out onto a vast stone terraces with many cascading steps, giving onto a breathtaking view of an immaculatedly groomed garden rife with bubbling fountains and meticulously trimmed greenery.
