Intro to Café Independants
Feeling hip? Check out Kyoto’s own underground scene (literally), the basement restaurant/venue Café Independants. A wide array of international brews is available, as are all sorts of combinations of coffee drinks. The food is hip – fresh ingredients creatively arranged – and very satisfying without overstuffing. All sorts of cool cats and fashionable ladies will spend hours down here, talking about any topic you can imagine or just reading everything from intellectual tomes to manga. One gets the feeling that if the French Revolution had occurred in Japan, it would have been planned here. Virtually every day an act of some sort plays the makeshift stage – sometimes locals just getting some work in, sometimes nationally recognized acts that demand a hefty entrance fee and transform the café into a club. In addition the entryway’s stairs are lined with flyers and brochures about every arty thing happening for the next few months within Kansai, and the first floor of the building houses a low-key art gallery that displays promising local artists and their wares (many times the artists are hanging around and ready to talk about their work, if you ask). You can find Café Independants a block west of the Sanjo and Teramachi intersection (where cars rarely ride).
