At the eastern edge of Shijo you’ll find Yasaka Jinja Shrine, a meeting place for thousands of Kyoto lovers.  In the back is Maruyama Koen (or Park), a small scenic locale that is one of the focal points of Hanami (spring cherry blossom viewing).  Also the central places for numerous celebratory events – including New Year’s and the large Gion Festival in mid-July – Yasaka Jinja is a central spiritual landmark.
