Pancake Rocks

Intro to Pancake Rocks Edit Section - Punakaiki Natural Site : Pancake Rocks

The so-called Pancake Rocks are thin layers of limestone rocks that look like stacks of pancakes.  Geologically mysterious, the Rocks are compelling because of both their natural beauty and their inexplicability.  A trail begins across the street from the visitor center and meanders past several different areas of the limestone cliffs.  The most spectacular time to see the rocks is at high tide, as water surges through holes in the rock cliff to create the effect of giant blowholes; inquire at the visitor's center to determine the best time to see the blowholes.  Allow about 20-30 minutes for the experience.
