Monuments and Historical Sites:

Plaza Mayor

Intro to Plaza Mayor Edit Section - Madrid Monuments and Historical Sites : Plaza Mayor

Serving as a market place since the 15th century (although it was at that time outside the modest city walls), Plaza Mayor has been the setting for everything from autos de fé  (humiliating processions of heretics during the Inquisition) and witch-burning to pro-republican rallies.  Today it makes for a pleasant morning stroll or afternoon café at one of the many terraza bars.  Pay special attention to the two-towered Casa de la Panadería (“the House of the Bakery”), which was designed by Juan de Herrera—the foremost architect of the Castilian Baroque style exemplified by slate roofs and pointed turrets—and completed in 1590, making it the plaza’s oldest building.  Since the early 1990s, the building’s façade has been covered in wildly colorful mythological murals.
