Monuments and Historical Sites:

Wat Phrathat

Intro to Wat Phrathat Edit Section - Chiang Mai Monuments and Historical Sites : Wat Phrathat

Nothing compares to Wat Phrathat, commonly called Doi Suthep as it sits atop the mountain of the same name.  The story goes a Lanna king had a relic of the Buddha which miraculously duplicated itself.  He put the relic on the back of a white elephant (an auspicious animal in Thailand) and declared wherever the elephant chose would be the relic’s new home.

And the elephant climbed the mountain and peacefully died at Wat Phrathat.

Pilgrims from all over make the journey and enjoy the spectacular view of the city and surrounding mountains from above.  Many also continue on to a village of hill tribe people, very tourist-oriented.

This is a very serene and peaceful place to spend a few hours meditating.
