La Brea Tar Pits – If the hustle and bustle of modern Los Angeles gets a little overwhelming, check out the La Brea Tar Pits, where you can experience L.A. as it was 10,000 years ago. These genuine tar pits, in the center of the city, have been trapping creatures and preserving them in asphaltic ooze for eons. The adjoining Page Museum has the most extensive collection of Ice Age plants and animals in the world. You can even watch from behind glass as bones are cleaned and repaired. The most vicious agents roaming Rodeo Drive have nothing on the saber-toothed cats that used to live here.
