Things To See and Do:

Tijuana

Intro to Tijuana Edit Section - San Diego Things To See and Do : Tijuana

The Mexican border is only 15 miles south of downtown San Diego and many people go there to stock up on beer or party without and I.D. If you are driving it is not a good idea to bring your car into Mexico since no insurance offers coverage there. Drive down, park in one of the many lots on the American side and walk across the border. There are also trolleys that take you there from downtown. Tijuana is in no way a good representation of Mexico; it is a typical border city with much poverty, crime and commerce. Expect being swarmed by kids selling Chiclets or wanting to braid your hair for a dollar. Outside the restaurants they try to outyell each other with offers of free tequila, cheap beer and tacos, or photos with the painted donkeys. If you decide to shop with American dollars be careful to calculate the price yourself, since exchange rates often are mysteriously miscalculated. When returning to the States, you may have to stand in the passport control line for quite a while, especially if you’re not an American citizen. More than anything, a trip to Tijuana is a very interesting and sometimes depressing experience in social observation.
