City Lights Bookstore

Intro to City Lights Bookstore Edit Section - San Francisco Books : City Lights Bookstore

Since 1953 when poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin founded
this intimate bookstore, City Lights has been providing the raw
material for insurgent thinking and anti-authoritarian politics. When
City Lights published Allen Ginsberg’s controversial poem “Howl” in
1956 the bookstore became synonymous with the counter-culture Beat
writers. Now an official San Francisco Landmark, City Lights still
provides popular and underground literature to free thinking bookworms.
