Golden Gate Park

Intro to Golden Gate Park Edit Section - San Francisco Park : Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is larger than New York's Central Park and extends from the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood right out to the pacific coast. It was established for the people in 1870 and, in fact, the vast green fields and eucalyptus groves that can be seen there now used to be sand dunes. The whole area had to be replanted to make the park.

The park remains a symbol of San Francisco's dedication to nature and culture. There are huge expanses of untrammeled flora and the fauna that live in it. But there are also strange little themed areas dedicated to Japanese or Eskimo culture, for example. 75,000 San Franciscans visit the park each week and on any given day you'll find it filled with rollerbladers and picnics.

The park also contains the California Academy of Sciences, the new de Young Museum, a host of individual gardens, and all sorts of outdoor game courts/fields/greens. Whether you're into basketball or bocce ball, horseriding or horseshoes, you can do it in Golden Gate Park.
