Intro to de Young Museum
The de Young, in Golden Gate Park, is one of San Francisco's oldest cultural attractions. In 1893 M.H. de Young, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle, felt that California should have a cultural fair to keep pace with the extravagent expositions in Chicago and elsewhere. After holding the California Midwinter International Exposition de Young had a huge profit burning a hole in his pocket and was expected to return the land he used for the expo to the city. He decided to donate this new money as well and lobby for a new museum. The de Young opened its doors in 1895.
Northern California was abuzz as the "new de Young" opened in October 2005. It is in a new gorgeous building designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Fong & Chan Architects of San Francisco. The museum houses American art from the 17th through 20th centuries (including some modern stars like Gerhard Richter), and art of the native Americas, Africa, and the Pacific.
