Monuments and Historical Sites:

Freedom Tower

Intro to Freedom Tower Edit Section - Miami Monuments and Historical Sites : Freedom Tower

Something definitely worth seeing is The Freedom Tower, built in 1925 in Mediterranean Revival style. For thirty years it was the home of Miami News & Metropolis, and when the newspaper went out of business lay vacant for a long time. As the wave of Cuban refugees started, the building was taken over by the government to house all the Cuban refugees. Much like an Ellis Island, it housed medical, processing and relief services for the newly arrived. When it was no longer needed for immigration services in the seventies, the Tower became a casualty of negligence. In the nineties squatters had taken to it as a shelter, vandalizing and further sending it down the path of destruction, and it was rotting from the inside. It was finally purchased by Cuban descendant Jose Mas Canosa, restored to its former glory, and set up as a museum of Cuba and Cuban-Americans. It also houses a library with books about the Cuban refugee experience, as well as the offices of the Cuban American National Foundation. The beautiful building is a symbol of so many things for so many Miamians, and a true gem of the city’s heritage.
