Intro to The Keys
If you feel like a change of pace, just drive south and you’ll eventually end up in the Keys, where civilization have never seemed further away. Here, it is all about boats, fishing, margaritas and the good life. The Florida Keys are a set of small islands connected by hundreds of bridges, the longest one being the Seven Mile Bridge. About an hour south of Miami is Key Largo, the northernmost of the keys, often called the diving capital of the world. If you go all the way south, about three and a half hours away is the southernmost city in the continental USA, Key West. With an atmosphere like no other place, Key West has long been a refuge for outcasts, now represented by a large gay community. Among those who have called Key West home are Ernest Hemingway, Henry Truman, Thomas Edison and Tennessee Williams. The sunset is a popular attraction that turns Mallory Square into a spectacle of performance artists, magicians, and animal shows each night.
