Things To See and Do:

The Dakota

Intro to The Dakota Edit Section - New York Things To See and Do : The Dakota

The Dakota, Central Park West at 72nd St., gained fame recently as the building outside of which John Lennon was assassinated; built from 1881-4, it was one of the first major housing developments in upper Manhattan.  The name, “The Dakota,” honors the building’s initial isolation (and emphasizes doubts that it would ever be inhabited).  By the beginning of the 20th century, the Dakota had become a stylish address and was a significant cash cow for its developer Edward Clark, the president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
