NYC Day 2Yesterday afternoon I went from feeling bad to worse, and stayed in the hotel room while Zach met up with some friends for dinner. I watched several episodes on MTV of My Super Sweet 16 and 8th & Ocean. lol Today I'm feeling better... I woke up at about 10am and drug myself out of bed, got dressed and hit the streets at about 11.
I walked south on 5th Ave and then onto Broadway, walking through Union Square and onto the Village and SoHo (which was awesome, I got some incredible jewelry from street vendors, and spent some time browsing through Kate's Paperie which was a very fun store) and into the edge of Chinatown, where the masses of people kinda got to me-- I guess I was only at the edge of Chinatown and didn't get to go into it very much, and where I was it was just tourist shop after tourist shop and the sidewalks were PACKED and I don't deal well with being surrounded by people and not being able to move well. I did see one guy getting arrested though....
Anyway, so I hopped on the subway and headed for the WTC. It was interesting, I think it would have been much more powerful if I'd seen the site pre-9/11. It was still wierd seeing this big empty spot in the middle of the city... but construction has started, it looks like, for new buildings there. Perhaps I also kept things kinda superficial to avoid getting very deppressed. I did almost get tears in my eyes as I walked by some signs they had about 9/11 and a homeless guy was playing Amazing Grace on the flute... that was a bit much.
After that I rode the subway back uptown to the hotel, and hung out and rested there for a couple hours while I waited for Zach to get back home from working. I felt kinda bad sitting in my hotel room watching TV while I'm in NYC, but I'm also still sick (feeling much better than yesterday, thankfully!) and don't wanna completely overdo it. Zach and I went to dinner in the Lower East Side at this french bistro called Cafe Charbon, which was cute and pretty good. Then we walked back up to E 31st, stopping by Washington Square for a quick walk-by and then walking up 5th Ave the rest of the way.
My plan for tomorrow is to wake up somewhat early and head to the Museum of Natural History, spend the morning there (gotta check when they open), then take the subway down to Brooklyn, grab some classic New York style pizza at grimaldi's, walk accross the Brooklyn Bridge, then hang out in lower Manhattan for a bit-- I'd like to check out Washington Sq during the day, and on our walk tonight we found a very cute coffeeshop (Zach stopped in to use the bathrooms)called Think Coffee that's off Broadway and 3rd St that I'd like to check out again and actually have a drink and/or snack there.
Yesterday as I walked around I knew I was among mostly other tourists-- lots of families, snapping pictures here and there. Today I felt like I was surrounded much more by locals, which was a totally different feel. It was interesting and kinda cool being in the NYU area and seeing all the students walking around. I swear, the popularity of the iPod seems so much more pronounced here than anywhere else I've been-- it seemed like 1 out of 10 people on the street had the white headphone in their ears. |
