NYC - April 11

I Central Park

I couldn't go back to sleep this morning after Zach left for work at 6:15am, so finally at 6:45 I turned on the tv to see if anything was on and there was a SAVED BY THE BELL MARATHON!!!  I had it on till 9am, when I finally left the hotel room.    I grabbed breakfast at Mickey D's (mmmm mcgriddles....) and then headed up north towards Central Park and towards the Museum of Natural History.

Central Park is just amazing....  to have that huge block of space set out as a well-manicured, beautiful park in the middle of this crazy metropolitan area... truly awesome.  It may be my favorite part of the whole city. I eventually made it up to 80th St and into the museum, though unfortunately bny then I was already tired from the walking and couldn't do the museum justice.  I did look at the Rose Center and the awesome awesome awesome HUGE sphere where they do all the scale-comparison of everything from the huge vastness of the universe and the sun, to the teensy tiny-ness of electrons.  SO cool.  Then I looked at the Darwin exhibit which was pretty cool, and the dinosaurs too.

By then it was about noon, and although I was about ready to take a nap I took the subway all the way down to Brooklyn and then strolled around for a bit to try to find Grimaldi's.  I have to say.... I was a bit dissappointed.  I guess it was my mistake to go there solo, it's not very well set up for that.  I was put in a cramped little spot between all these other groups, and the smallest increment of pizza you can get is a 16" pizza (no slices).  Since it's thin crust I was able to eat half of it, but still kinda annoying to have to buy a whole pizza (I ended up pulling a Jenny and giving the leftovers to a bum afterwards).  And the pizza was...  ok.  Yes, the ingredients were nice and fresh and it was good and all, but honestly, as a matter of personal preference, I like good ole 2am 6th Street (in Austin, TX) pizza better.    But I'm glad I tried it.

I then walked accross the bridge, which was pretty cool.  I could see the Statue of Liberty from way far away.  That was cool.  The footpath of the bridge dumped me off at City Hall so I wandered around the park there which was pretty cool, and then I took the subway to 4th street and went into that coffee house from yesterday and got some iced coffee to sip as I read by Us Weekly that I'd bought from a kiosk.  It was a nice place to decompress and rest up a bit.  Zach called me up around 4pm to say he was on his way back, so I came back to the hotel to meet up with him. Poor guy has had a hellish commute the past 2 days... but the good news is work is over, so we get to explore the city together tomorrow!!  Yay!

Anyway, tonight we went back up towards the Upper West Side and Central Park for dinner, and we stopped by the Tavern on the Green and had a drink at the bar (the restaurant was full-- the bar was pretty swanky, I totally dug it), then found this little place called Frank & Vinnie's (I think) that was totally cute and the food was pretty good.  Interesting side note-- tonight I had prime rib, last night I had salmon, and each night Zach has tried my dinner and compared it to the fish/steak he gets on a fairly regular basis at work...  It helped remind him of how good he has it there.  We then took a short ride on a horse-drawn carriage around Central Park, which was quite nice.  The park and the lights from the city look very cool at night.
