This morning Zach and I headed down to the Lower East Side to try The Doughnut Plant, rumored to be even more scrumptiously delicious than Krispy Kreme (interestingly, North Carolina seems to be a big place in doughnut history-- it is the birthplace of Krispy Kreme, and the Doughnut Plan't doughnut recipe).
So we went, we found it, we tried some doughnuts... and they were good. Pretty good. Thicker and chewier than Kirspy Kreme, not quite as sweet which Zach liked. The strawberry glazed (with real strawberries) donut was mighty delicious, as was the vanilla bean flavor. I'm not sure if I'd completely give up on my favorite donut place (or their custard-filled chocolate glazed donut) but it is a mighty rival. We then rode the subway uptown towards the Museum of Art, walking through Central Park to get there, then spent a few hours inside the museum surveing Asian art & sculptures, and some American art as well (north, central, & south).
Upon leaving we grabbed hot dogs from a street vendor (an NYC must, right?) and then headed to the Daily Show recording studio with the hopes of getting last-minute stickers.... only to realize that they were not taping this week. But it was still neat to get to see it, and interesting to walk around a slightly more gritty (and decidedly un-touristy) area of NY.
We then walked downtown through Times Square and all the madness therein (holy ADD!) and went to the Empire State Building. Unfortunately by this afternoon the sky had clouded over and it got pretty windy and cold, so the view wasn't quite as nice and it was COLD up there, but still a good thing to do. We also did the (ultra cheesy) Sky Ride IMAX movie (with Kevin Bacon narrating! lol) and got a free slice of pizza afterwards.
We are now back at our hotel, and probably need to pack-- tomorrow we have an early morning train to Baltimore. We have some friends we'll be staying with down there, and during the day I think we'll go over to DC and check out some of the things we missed out on when we went last May. I'm not sure if we'll go back out for a drink or something tonight, we'll see. We're considering ordering some chinese take-out for dinner (so we can eat out of the cute little containers they use here). I feel bad that btoday was the first real day Zach and I explored the city together.... but then again he's been here before. And I'm sure we'll be back. It's been a blast. |
