Introduction
2008-08-12 to 2008-09-16
It's August 1st—eleven days away from our biggest adventure ever! I'm afraid to talk it up too much. It's pretty ambitious to think that this trip will all go according to plan. If it were just Bill and I it would be no big deal. But now we have Josie Mae. She'll turn five months old when we get to Chicago, and we'll be on the road for the entire sixth month of her little life! To add to the mix, we're bringing our "first baby" Satchmo along. He's about 80 in dog years. As I write this, he's wearing a lampshade collar to prevent him from scratching areas where he had several lumps removed. Sorry, I know that's gross. He'll get his stitches out next week, and when his fur eventually grows back, he'll be as cute and cuddly as ever.
If we make it through all five weeks of this trip, Josie Mae will have passed through almost half of our 50 states, and she won't remember any of them. This is my first attempt at a blog. I think that when she gets a little older, Josie Mae will want to see this. But even if she's not interested, I know my mom will be. Hi Mama!
A few weeks ago, the four of us took a little test trip to Asheville, North Carolina to prepare ourselves for life on the road. Josie Mae experienced five new states. (See photos.) Along the way we met some of my Naccari cousins at Joe Davenport's Pizza Palace in Birmingham, Alabama. I have fantastic cousins! We're hoping to reconnect with family and friends throughout the country. I love to travel, but I get a little overwhelmed and homesick when I realize how big this world is. Seeing a familiar friendly face helps bring it down to size. I'll never forget the time we had a chance encounter with my friend Wendy and her husband on the Champs-Elysées. What a great surprise that was! And then the next night when Bill and I were boarding the Metro...the doors opened and there was Wendy and Erich again. Isn't that crazy?
We can't wait to get on the road. And if you are one of our generous hosts along the way, we can't wait to see you!
