European Fun - A Ruined city

A Ruined city 2006-07-28

The most active volcano in the world, Vesuvius, erupted, covering the ancient city of Pompeii. It has since been recovered as an archaeological site, with 3.3 million artifacts recovered, many very well preserved by being covered in lava (including many people).

The Old Pompeii site is impressive with its sophisticated architecture, beautiful and elaborately detailed sculptures, brick and stone work, and mosaics. The site is huge, and we could barely scratch the surface in the few hours we had to roam around it. We missed the stadium, but saw some of the temples and theaters. As they have stripped out most of the art, we did see better artifacts at the museum in Naples, though there were bodies of several people here as well as a very few artifacts in context.

The sun was brutally hot, and without sunscreen on, I am now somewhat discolored...

The entry few is pretty steep at $16. And it is ashame that more isn't accomplished with those funds, such as cleaning up the trash that the flood of tourists leave behind...  even just adding more garbage bins would help...
