European Fun - Away from the Tourists...

Away from the Tourists... 2006-07-31

Well, today we are heading Northward, out of Rome, and into a smallish town of Assisi. I slower pace will be refreshing, and less exposure to tourists will hopefully mean the locals will be more friendly. Maybe I have not even mentioned that yet, but so far Italians seem to be rather rude.

Assisi is making me appreciate Italy, finally. I spent only a day there, but the locals are friendly, and the town and landscape are beautiful: I spend the day wandering through the maze of beautiful, small stone streets between stone buildings, at the walled edges of the town gazing over the picturesque rustic countryside. The town is full of old churches, and I spent several hours wandering into and out of them, and meditating. Lots of Monks and Nuns around also... in a few different dress styles. The monks here seemed esspecially mellow and sincere.

We stayed an an amazing hotel outside of town, nearer to the train station. For the same price we were spending elsewhere for kinda dumpy budget hotels, here it felt more like three star hotel. Taking a bus to town was slightly annoying, but relatively fast an easy. We kinda got ripped off on our taxi to and from the train station, but there wasnt much we could do about it, other than walking the 1.2km on foot with heavy bags. But overall great experience. Free breakfast, huge, clean, air-conditioned rooms, and mostly friendly and helpful staff.
