London in a Day
2006-07-19
At last we arrived in London... it was 1pm, and after several more sleep deprived hours of waiting for our bags, going through immigration, and riding a tube, we arrived at Astor Hostel, where I had booked the two nights of accommodation needed for our stay in London. Getting to our hostel was easy, my previous time in London has given my some familiarity with the ways of traveling in London, and England in general. The tube ride however was an unpleasantly hot and stuffy affair... and the 30ish minutes it takes to get to central London felt soo prolonged. As nice as some decent sleep( i.e. non airplane sleep ;-) at our hostel would have felt, we hadn't the time for it, if we wanted to see any of London. The delayed flight turned an already world-wind tour of London (2 days) into a 24 hour one. Not even enough time to offset the jetlag... better to ignore any thoughts of it.
Our arrival was timed perfectly for the 24 hour freak head wave of the last 50 or so years. Though somehow it didn't really bother me so much... perhaps it was because of a short trip I had in Costa Rica earlier this year, which acclimated me to the heat a bit... having grown up in hot and humid southern Louisiana, I shouldn't really need re-acclimation, but I think my time in Santa Cruz has perhaps spoiled me with its incredible weather.
The time spent in London consisted of an irregular sleep schedule and a lot of of wandering about the streets. We experienced Camdem Town, Covent Gardens, Bloomsbury area, Buckingham Palace, some of the smaller parks, and other areas... I think am always overly impressed with the buildings in London, so I will refrain from rambling on about them... they are well, old, and consist of alot of brick, and statue carved rock.
