European Fun - On Route to Belgium

On Route to Belgium 2006-07-24

Taking a night train to Brussels, we missed an opportunity to see much of the countryside of Belgium. I imagine it is probably much like that of the Netherlands which we did experience on our bus from the Eindhoven airport into Amsterdam. It is mostly pleasant tree spotted hills, with cows, and quaint buildings...

Brussels was indeed a very nice city, and to my surprise mostly french speaking. Belgium is divided linguistically into a Dutch speaking North, and a French speaking South. Brussels is actually in the North, but is mostly French speaking. Unlike France (or Paris I should say, since it is only place in France I have been and can really talk about) the locals are very friendly, and don't mind so much struggling with you as you try to communicate. There are relatively few that speak English here, mostly in broken bits and pieces that comes from dealing with a fair number of tourists.

To make the best use of our limited time in Brussels and to minimize walking on my sore feet, we decided to take a city bus tour, which gave us a nice general view of its history and primary monuments as it drove around the town; me peering down from the top of one of those doubler decker bus that I thought only existed in London.

Well our stay was so short that we missed out on the Belgium waffles and the Belgium chocolate, thought we did make it to a chocolate museum. Naturally a tourist trap, but fun all the same. There was a really awsome cathedral with a gothic facade. Check out the photos of this, and in particular the huge pipe organ!
