San Pedro Sula Int. Airport
2006-10-02
As my plane landed, i could have sworn that we were flying over fields of large Aloe plants. Its more likely that they were palms, but from the air i was looking down at row after row of aloe. It would have made a great plane photo, but i just didn't get it in time. Alas. Repeating patterns of little green star shapes beneath me.
Neither flight was extremely eventful. Mentally I'm in the slow process of shifting into my travel mode. I' haven't quite gotten there yet, but I'm can feel the changes occurring.
I landed slightly embarrassed at my lack of agility in the Spanish language (despite Nicole's recent efforts with me, the bulk of the Spanish i speak still comes from Sesame Street). I felt like the gringo, but being afraid to speak won't get you anywhere. So to cover up my shyness, I've been extremely warm and polite with people and I've been pleased with the response. I've got hours of Spanish lessons on my ipod. I'm hoping by the time i leave Utila (the island I'm diving on, where a lot of English is used apparently) i will be somewhat proficient in tourist Spanish.
I'm sitting in the San Pedro airport right now using wireless and working off of my own laptop. I think it's free, but won't know for sure till i get up to leave. As far as I'm concerned this makes the San Pedro airport much cooler than the Houston one. Even if Houston has snazzier architecture.
Bossa Nova is playing in the background, and the few steps I've taken outside have been extremely muggy. I look forward to the island.
I'll take my first dive tomorrow, and shortly after that start my Advanced Course. I can't wait for that. Today when i land in Utila i get to start pick up my (new dive) books and get a beer. Also appealing. Beers, books and beach.
Anyway, really there's not much to report yet... I'm still in transit. More to come.
