Curious side note about Guatemalan music...
A few pages ago, you may recall reading that we heard some rather odd "
Tom and Jerry-esque
" music during our long-ass busride from Flores. For your cultural enrichment, I am going to include a couple of disturbing videos. The first video is from the aforementioned bus ride. I thought it was just some music that was supposed to, you know, make us
relax
. A form of relaxation like that you might imagine feeling after having your 2nd lobotomy.
I was disturbed to find that this kind of "music" is actually typical Guatemalan street music! Yikes!!! I have attached a little clip of some street performers who were hired to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a local traditional Guatemalan restaurant. Hear a similarity? I've decided that this is how the Catholic Church controls the masses here: they play this music on the streets so that the unfortunate folks with a sense of hearing will take refuge in the nearest church.
