We took a two hour taxi from Bangkok to visit our friends, Jim and Laurie Soda, who'd been living there on and off for nearly three years. They live in a basic apartment with a Very Nice pool, so we spent the first afternoon just sunbathing, and getting massaged (at $8 a pop, how could you not??). Alan got baked because he spent too much time in the blistering sun with no sunscreen. But for some reason, to this day, he has not peeled!
That night, they took us out to a place they call Walking St. to experience the local brand of nightlife. It was, interesting, to say the least. There are so many strip clubs, you have to search to find one that isn't. So, we of course checked one or two of them out. There are many young Thai girls inside, pole dancing with little or nothing on. They evidently are for sale, as each wore a number on her scanty panties and men would occasionally walk out with one. These men, in general, were either too fat, too ugly, or too creepy to find female companionship without resorting to this. Although it was kind of amusing for a short while, it quickly became, well... sad. So we split off from the main group for a spell and sat down for a beer in a nice wholesome Irish bar. Then Jim came to see what we were up to, and we all headed off to a cleaner club, ironically named Climax. This was more of your basic rock-n-rool, pool-playing bar, and so we had some good clean fun. We all made it home in the wee hours, tired and glad to be leaving the next day. Jim and Laurie were great hosts, and it was good to see them.
