On the road at last...

We slept the entire 3.5 hr flight from Dallas. (We were exhausted from packing and didn’t sleep much on the redeye from SFO to Dallas). We get to the airport and buy tickets for a puddle-jumper that will take us to Caye Caulker, and then are accosted by the Belizean equivalent of Tatoo (from Fantasy Island) who tells us, with the smooth voice a weasel getting shock treatment, that their “picturesque†airport bar serves the best rum drink in all of Belize. We decide after interviewing two takers to let this amazing offer pass us by. The small plane, a Cessna, fit about 10 passengers. Before we got to our destination, the plane made an unscheduled stop at a tiny island with a runway that would have made Jed Clampett's driveway look like JFK. We then took on a family of locals (relatives of the pilot, perhaps?) for the final leg. The “terminal†at Caye Caulker was nothing more than a trailer with a desk and a phone inside. We called a cab. It turns out that cabs in Caye Caulker are actually golf carts. There are only four or five actual cars on the whole island. The police have one, which hardly seems necessary. What are they going to need it for, waging a high-speed chase with a golf cart?
We like our hotel room. Nice happy orange and red color scheme, with Moroccan (!) highlights.
Not to mention, they have a POOL! The only one on this tiny Caye. Very welcome after a sweltering day of scuba diving and novel-reading. Tune in next time for the gossip on diving Belize and a glimpse into Lisa's successful dive training. She's a champ!
