Phi Phi Island
3/15/7
Well, we must be getting pretty tired of traveling by now! We managed to do a lot of relaxing and not much else during our three days in Phi Phi. We did manage two dives (bringing Lisa to 51!). The visibility wasn't that great, but we saw some great sea life: morays, banded sea snakes, a leopard shark, a couple of cuttlefish, and a Seahorse! Still no octopus (other folks saw octopi on several occasions in the Maldives, but no luck for us!). The dives were off Phi Phi Leh, which is a picturesque island covered in lush vegetation, with lush cliffs dropping straight to the ocean from over 1,000 ft. This is also the island where they filmed "The Beach", based on the book where some young backpackers find a tropical paradise and get in over their heads with local pot growers.
We saw some interesting footage of the devastation caused by the Tsunami that struck this part of the world in 2004. In Phi Phi, 2500 people died, which is catastrophic given there weren't even twice that number living there at the time. We could still see areas of devastation, where old buildings were still standing, torn in pieces by the massive waves. We took a hike up to the top of the island, where you could see the curious shape of Phi Phi Don (main island), with it's narrow strand of sand connecting the two main land masses.
We also saw some great fire dancers and drank one too many pina coladas on the night before our dive (tsk tsk!). Our excuse was that tomorrow would be St. Patrick's Day. Needless to say, when that day came, we didn't join in the festivities (if there were any). We spent the afternoon lounging around the pool. Exciting stuff, indeed!
