Exploring the Bay Area - Year of the Blog

Year of the Blog 2006-01-27

I went to a Chinese New Year party at John Givens' house. It is the Year of the Dog. People born this year are supposed to be loyal and honest but also stubborn.

John and Debbie's house is really put together. A collection of stringed instruments of various sizes hangs on one wall, adjacent to a bookshelf packed with all the tomes John and Debbie's collective head has absorbed, or will soon. I've described it as "disconcertingly domestic" before. In truth it's perfect for grad student parties.

George found a digital camera and got this idee fixe that he should be taking pictures. I took a few of him for some meta taking-pictures-about-taking-pictures action. The shots aren't that impressive.

More impressive, by far, is the shiner with which I rang in the (Chinese) new year. I got it playing soccer. I haven't been able to confirm that it qualifies as a "shiner," and no ladies have confirmed that it's impressive yet, but my neighbor noticed it at least and was curious enough to ask. Have a look. See? I'm talking about that dark spot below my eye...oh well...in better light maybe.
