Round the World - Bristol to Glasgow

Bristol to Glasgow 2006-06-22

The drive to Scotland was one of those things in your life you just have to do.  Hertz unfortunately had to upgrade us to a brand new Mercedes 4WD with 60 miles on the clock.  We agreed wholeheartedly to accept this unfortunate situation and set off with glee.  I was determined to be the chaufeur for the trip.  We set off at 9am and made over halfway to the lakes district at about 1pm - needless to say the Merc sat on 100MPH with ease ansd we had settled behind a speeding Lotus sports car all the way.

The scenery around the Lakes district was picture postcard stuff.  Bob was complaining about the fancy food we made him east the previous night so Nick and I were determined to find him some traditional 'bangers and mash'.  This we did down the smell streets of this english village were the |Merc felt like a tank - it drove fantastically of course and even went well down the wrong way of a one way street a few times.
We stopped for lunch along Lake Windemere the largest odf the lakes and to a traditional bleak and drizzly day proceeded to have a pint with a sausages and mash - anything to make Bob shut up.

Well we proceeded on our way and got to Glasgow at about 6pm.  The Holiday Inn was a bit of a challenge - I had a half used tin of paint left in my room which conjures images of someone painting overe bloodstains to hide the grissly evidence of some horrendous crime recently commtted in my room.

Nick's room didn't lock and you have to produce ID or a room card to buy a can of coke as they don't take cash after about 10pm.  - All this for £155 a night - about $350AUD!

We had a good night out in the centre of Glasgow - it really is a dour place!  Thje people do not seem to e happy and you really get the impression that you have to be a hard Son of a b***h to grow up in this place.

Some of the pubs were very interesting though and once insidfe the people seem to be intent on having fun.  Towards the end of the night we ventured to Suckihole street, which is a series of pubs that you walk by and downstirs in the basemnt there are bars below what presumaly inthe day are professional premises.  That was an interesting part althogh we did have to pick the local heavy metal, Led Zeppliun fan club!!!  The other place to see is the Social Club which is in Merchant Place in the city centre.  Above that is the flashest bar I have seen for a long while called 'one up'  which is where all the 'nice people' go with chandoliers etc

Anyway it wasn't a big night and we got home about midnight as tomorrow we are on our way to Istanbul
