Round the World - Day 2 Vancouver

Day 2 Vancouver 2006-06-18

Good Day - Took a tour of Grolsch Mountan (Tourist trap where people ski in winter and hike up mountains in summer)- we got their early and was enthused by the sign stating  - unlimited visibility - which obviously means greater than 200m because we could not see a bloody thing.  We ventured onto the ski lift - 'screaming eagle' which was a ski lift operated in summer - Bob and I saw some greyish white stuff which which Nick reckonned was snow - Bob and I called B****T - it was a tourist display of fake snow made out of fibre glass or styrofoam.  We naturally  heaped ridicule on Nick for several  inutes. Eventually, Nick got  so pissed off that he went over scraped up some of the fake snow and threw it at us - OK so it WAS snow! - we were Queenslanders and hardly could be experts in snow recognition.

We had  good time and saw  a very entertaining lumberjack display before returning to earth after buying the kids the obligatory t-shirt and snow dome!

We were in town to meet with Ocenworks a contractor of the Navy's and the CEO, Jim English, whom we had all met on previous occasions in Australia and he showed us around the facility and at the new submarine escape system being built for the USN - the engineering of the system is incredible.

- That evenng, Jim took us to his place for a very entertaining evening - he lives on an isloated fjord outside of Vancouver and proceeded to cook us a fantastic meal of BBQ salmon as we watched the evening gradually dissolve away into the Canadian evening twilight.  A few world problems were solved and quite few decent red wines and a particularly palatable top shelf tequila were consumed.

A very satisfyng night - did I mention that I saw a bear? and got the phots to prove it!!
