From Cold to Colder - Meeting Santa on his own territory

Meeting Santa on his own territory 2005-12-18

Being near Christmas and all, we decided to go meet Santa.  Why wait for him, when you can visit him at home?  Or so the Danes claim...

I arrive in Copenhagen, wondering if it's anything like Solvang :) (the small Danish tourist town in California; "Danish capital of America").  For Santa's home town it is a little quiet, but the near freezing weather may have something to do with it.

Still we found plenty to do.  Simply wandering around a new city is enough entertainment for me.  The most amazing thing... people really like hot dogs here!  Well, not quite the same, but it's close enough I'm not embarrassed to use the term.  There must be 3 hot dog stands on every block downtown.

Since our hotel was right beside Tivoli, we had to pay a visit to the amusement park (after having the daily hot dog of course).  Being a large amusement park in the center of Copenhagen, you would think it's easy to get in.  Bright lights, hundreds of people visible from the road.  But where's the entrance?  We go to the corner where there is a clearly marked entrance, but it's locked!  Is it closed?  How can that be!  I walked along one side of it, and then the other.  Back and forth.  How can we be missing the entrance?  Then I see some other tourists doing the same thing.  We put our heads together and discover it's on the other side, past the museum that seemed to signal the end of the park.

By the time we get inside the icy rain is making the outdoor sections quite unappealing.  After touring several exciting gifts shops, we make our way into a large covered exhibit, features more mechanized elves than I've ever seen.
