Big Island, Hawaii

Introduction 2/25/06

I’ve heard some people live on the Big Island for years without seeing everything. That may have more to do with those people than the island; it’s like New Yorkers that grow up without ever seeing the Statue of Liberty from Ellis Island. But alas, there is usually a logic behind the naming of something, usually tied directly to identity. And judging from the name of this island, you can probably guess where we’re going with this. Among other things, the Big Island happens to host the tallest mountain in the world, measured from the bottom of the ocean. It’s also incongruously proportioned to its neighboring isles; in fact my friends, it is so comparatively ginormous that all the remaining Hawaiian Islands can fit inside it with room to grow. Speaking of growing, the Big Island actually is. Like a direct rebuff to the sinking Maldives, the Big Island envelops two active volcanoes that continue to add lava land every year.

The point of this story is that the Big Island of Hawaii offers plenty if not too much to see in one trip, a realization I came to while starting off on a one week vacation. I am certainly no stranger to the Statue of Liberty – or better put, to the Golden Gate Bridge that sits just miles from my home. I fell onto the Big Island with competitive eyes and that annoying prickle to do it all.
