Florence: Romantic or Romanticized?

Introduction 01/06/04 to 04/30/04

The Truth About Florence

Every person I have met who has spent some time in Florence gets soft around the edges if not seriously schmaltzy at the mere mention of this citta’s name. If you’ve never been but have read most guidebooks, you would understand why. Deemed the gem of Italy, this town has all of the wonders of Italian Renaissance, from Michealangelo’s David to the arty wonder world of the Uffizi museum, the beauty of old European architecture set around a river, and cozy ristourantes and cafés with all the Italian cuisine you’ve ever drooled of. Any one who wouldn’t want to travel there should be ashamed of herself.

As a veteran Florence resident, I have the same romantic opinion. But looking back always occurs with those memory glasses, and thinking of how the bad is often forgotten completely, I realized a second, deeper look at Florence conjured up slightly different images lying surreptitiously aside the charming ones. Was my memory was indeed tinted by rose-colored neuron paths? If I revisited my glorified past, would I find Florence not romantic, but merely romanticized?
