Introduction
7/21/06 to 7/25/05
Welcome to the land of mormons. I should know, because the first thing people ask when I say I'm from Utah is "are you the third wife of a Mormon prophet?" I try to stop the spread of false rumors about the Utahns, such as the presence of small horns hidden beneath every Mormon's hair, the prohibition of alcohol that was never halted when the rest of the country went non-sober, and that you can't be from Utah without being a Mormon. But that's not what I really want to talk about. There are plenty of Mormons in the "Beehive" state that tend to define if not define culture, politics, and even the law...but the one thing untouched by Utah's religion is the massive spanse of insanely diverse, insanely beautiful land that religion nestles snugly inside. You may have heard of Moab...did you know that was in Utah? What about Zions? Arches? Monument Valley? Yes, those are here too.
Let me tell you about another part of Utah you may not have heard of (and if you haven't heard of the others, hurry, hurry! Go to Google and find a picture before you spend another second of your life in beautiless misery!)
The Uintah mountains. NOT the Utah mountains, although the similarity of spelling has left me wondering more than once. For all you Californian wilderness-lovers who get bitter everytime crowds ruin your holiday weekend trip to Yosemite, you should have moved to Utah. The Uintah National Forest offers a 10 degree discount from sweltering summer heat, viscious tree lines, snow caps in July, and lakes bursting with trout too accustomed to shiny fishing lures (they'll taunt and taunt you but never bite your little plastic sardine). And......a whole lot of no people.
