Chicago heat

Introduction July 24, 2006 to Aug 3, 2006

So I am visiting my friends here in Chicago. There has been a huge heat wave here, temperatures reaching over 100 (and feeling like more with the humidity). There is a huge party seen here, underground and not. Every summer they have various city sponsered parties, lots of techno and jungle and some live music ranging from rock to jazz and classical. All these events are called Summerdance and is usually pretty cool cause it combines all the party kids and the people who just like the music who ordinarly wouldn't be involved in the party scene.

My friend lives off of Lakeshore drive, a really beautiful road that is along the side of Lake Michigan When Lakeshore drive ends and becomes Sheradon and intersects with Hollywood, there is a really nice beach. They are currently having a little bit of a problem with Ecoli, but there are color coded flags to let the pubic know when it is safe and when it isn't. This beach is very nice because it is clean, both sand and water. There is very little debris or algae. The water however is rather cool, even though there is a huge sandbar and the water is rather shallow, but there are spots where you can deffinatly get yourself underwater if you want. Yesterday it was about 100 degrees outside, and the water was 50 degrees. The water chilled us, but as soon as we got out it felt warm again so the cold water actually felt perfect. I have taken nothing but pure cold showers here, and the physical exucrtion of breathing makes the water turn back into sweat in a matter of seconds. Airconditioning is a beautiful thing indeed.

Italian Beef sandwhichs seem to be a huge local speciality. I have yet to try one, but I am determined to try one at least before I leave. There is a huge population of Eastern Europeans here, Slovs and Polish parts of town are numerous.

Another local specialty I would suggest is Garrett's Popcorn. They are all over downtown, and have like Cheese popcorn and Carmel and various other kinds. The Chicago Mix combines both in a bag, and is quite tasty.

All in all, the Chicago scene can be pure insanity, as Cities in general can be, but downtown with Millienium park is really beautiful and a fun place to go.

Hey Tara! Amanda says Santa Cruz is in a heat wave also, and I am certainly not enjoying the heat here in Italy... I was in the worse heat wave in the past 50 years in London 2 weeks ago too. must be global warming, yikes!  beef sandwiches must be an italian specialty in general, they are everywhere here in Italy.. they are the train and bus station staple food, and many other restaurants and fast food joints have them...and i am sick of them ;-)
