Introduction
2004-12-07
I have edited out most of the more personal struggles and conflicts in this journal which filled my original writings while in Thailand. Through living consciously and with self reflection, I have come to realize that because one's physical body is experiencing something does not necessarily mean one's heart and spirit are in the same place. Despite certain inner emotional troubles however, I experienced a myriad of magical moments and places throughout Thailand. I departed for this trip just four months after graduating from college and travelling through Poland, France, Spain and Morocco. These most recent experiences largely colored my perspective of, and thoughts on Thailand. I went with my boyfriend Abe, and we later met up with one of my old high school friends, Tam.
I was surprised how mellow travelling in Thailand was, since it is officially a third world country. The climate is nice & warm, which probably somehwhat lessons the harshness of poverty. People are friendly (as anyone will tell you) and most speak some English (at least the ones who deal with tourists) so it's very easy to get around. The larger cities, like Bankok, can be confusing, but you can always grab a taxi or tuk-tuk driver to take you to where you need to go. Getting very sick there is NOT inevitable, which I was most pleased to discover (I only had a slight upset stomach for a few days). The plane ticket is probably the hardest thing to get, but once you're there, everything is cheap and not having to worry about the cost of things takes another huge stress off of travelling. The adventures are in the North and the true vacationing (as well as the large majority of tourists) lie in the South. If there weren't so many other places I want to explore, I'd return to Thailand in a heartbeat.
