Travel Journal:

Across the USA

Introduction 2005-12-04 to 2005-12-23

After three glorious months in the high peaks of
the Adirondack Park in upstate New York (two hours from Montreal, two minutes
from dozens of hiking trails), I am setting off back across the United States
to California, where steady employment and relentless sunshine await me. It’s
early December and most often in the single digits, ice crystals grate against
my ruddy cheeks, and short, frigid days alternate between a blinding white
and a brownish gray. The sun sets at four o’clock, the woodstove and
sub-freezing temperatures have dried out my skin and covered the arms of all my
sweaters in soot, I’ve mastered the uncomfortable art of going for a jog when
the thermometer reads 13 and calling NYSEG when the snow takes down yet another
tree on top of a power line, and the butterflies and autumn leaves are long
gone. It’s time to escape the North Country; California poppies await me at the
end of a 3,000-mile road. Luckily, the car I’m driving is a hybrid, which saves
hundreds of dollars in gas, and I’m planning on stopping in with friends and
relatives along the way. After spending time with my hosts in NYC, Washington,
DC, Asheville, NC, Kansas, and Colorado, I’ll hit up two of the most majestic
canyons in Utah and Arizona – Bryce Canyon and the illustrious Grand Canyon.
