Across Ireland - Galway

Galway

Soaked, half frozen, but still awestruck from Moher, we once again piled onto the bus to make way for the city of Galway.  Galway rests directly on the ocean of the west coast making it the subject of many a sea shanty.  A University city of gardens, cathedrals, and museums, Galway is a pleasant mix of tourist-friendly attractions as well as a down-to-earth local scene.  Not surprisingly, it was here that I spotted the first and only health food store throughout the entire trip.  Still densely populated but not to the point of claustrophobia, Galway is clean and friendly and caters to a variety of interests with a strong presence of traditional music in the pubs as well as a multitude of small shops.  I liked the feel far better than Limerick; the atmosphere is far more “homey” and oriented toward the arts than an impersonal commercial hub.  On the whole the food isn’t a whole lot better, but there are more options and because of the oceanside location, fresh fish is the best bet for edible protein.  Overall Galway is a beautiful and welcoming city located in a lovely part of Ireland making it a must for any tour of Eire.
