Edinburgh
By contrast, Edinburgh is a perfectly picturesque city—why we spent only a half a day here and four in Glasgow and not the other way around really boggled my mind. The whole city looks like a post card. The main is drag lined with Middle-Ages architecture and small shops. My personal favorite was a weaponry store where I got to swing around a claymore which sadly wouldn’t fit in my duffel bag. At the top of the city is Edinburgh Castle, once home to Mary, Queen of Scots. Despite the sardine-like crowds we had to maneuver through, the castle is well worth the hassle for the views of the city, the crown jewels, and wealth of historical information; something about a tracing the actual footsteps of kings and queens brings history to life in a way that text books just can’t. Though inundated with tourists (we encountered tourists from Japan, Germany, America, Iceland, and countless other places), the castle is a must-see for any visit to Scotland, much like the Tower of London for England.
After four grueling days in Glasgow with only a brief excursion to Edinburgh, our group departed by train for the Lake District of England.
