The Ceilidh: Scottish Culture
Skye is as rich in Celtic culture as it is in natural beauty. Skye is one of the few places in the world where you can meet native speakers of Scots-Gaelic; in fact one of our hosts, Anne, would sing to us in her native language. We were fortunate to be able to attend a Ceilidh (pronounced “kay-lee,” a traditional music and dance gathering) which epitomizes Celtic musical heritage. Because so few people live in Skye, we were treated to quite literally some of the best musicians in Scotland and around the world with in a small intimate setting. A Ceilidh in Skye is as about the most authentic you can find anywhere for Scottish music. The pipers, harpists, singers, and whistlers clad in kilts and tartans performed ballads thousands of years old as well as more modern pieces telling of migration from Skye to America and Canada. More than just a concert, we got a taste of how the Celts still preserve their history through the medium of music.
