Day Trip to Icheon
Anyone who is into ceramics MUST make time for the Icheon ceramics village. Icheon is located about an hour, by express bus, outside Seoul.
The bus took me into the city of Icheon, but we passed the village on the way to the bus station. There was a whole lot of confusion trying to explain to my cab driver that I wanted him to bring me to the ceramics village. I don't speak Korean, and I got spoiled in Seoul where a majority of the people speak at least a bit of English. There in Icheon, I didn't find a single English speaker. Eventually I made it, and I am so glad I did.
Ceramicists live and work in the village. There are countless shops ranging from large stores selling the work of many artists as well as mass produced items, to tiny operations attached to the artist's studio and selling only his or her work.
The smell of wood, burning in kilns, filled the crisp winter air, and inspired me. I could feel the creativity in my bones, invigorating my spirit! It was just perfect.
