Grendel's Den is a favorite with Harvard Square locals and students.  Located in the dusky cellar under Upstairs on the Square, this restaurant/bar has the most reasonable prices for beer, cocktails, and tapas.
On sunday from 8-11, they offer $1 appetizers (humus, salad, nachos, quesadillas, pasta, etc.).  Every night, from 8pm onward, they serve their entire menu half price, including a fun fondue platter. 
The atmosphere is relaxed and lowkey.  Music volume is variable, but there's no dance scene here. 
Has a reputation for taking a note from your mother in the place of of legal ID.
