Introduction to Africa Edit Section - Africa Travel Guide

The huge continent of Africa is the birthplace of human life. There is evidence of humans living in Africa from 7 million years ago, and written history--indeed, writing itself--begins here, in Egypt, in 3,000 BC. Whatever your color, Africa is in some sense home, and it's a phenomenal place to visit.

In the early 19th century the European "scramble for Africa," left nearly every corner of the continent claimed as colonial territory for one of the European powers. Not until after WWII did all African countries gain independence. Even when they did, most were crippled by years of political and economic control. Instability, corruption, and political authoritarianism have been pervasive problems.

Africa can be roughly divided into the areas north and south of the Sahara Desert, "North Africa" and "Sub-Saharan Africa," respectively. North Africa, the area from Egypt to Morocco, is largely Arabic-speaking. In Sub-Saharan Africa there are a number of different populations with as many different languages.
