Like many South American countries, Argentina's history is a story of struggle between indigenous people, Spanish conquistadors and British colonists. But when Napoleon overthrew King Ferdinand VII in 1816 Argentinians saw the opportunity to take control of their own country. Since then Argentina has been controlled by fragile democracies, including that of the popular reformer Juan Peron and his wife Eva, and military dictatorships. Democracy seems to have taken root for good since 1983, but Argentina has struggled with economic problems.

For the visitor Argentina offers a breathtaking natural environment. From glaciers to the peaks of Patagonia to the waterfalls at Iguazu, the country's environment is varied and beautiful, ready for hiking or fishing or rafting. And cities like Buenos Aires offer a view of contemporary, cosmopolitan Argentina along with the history of the past, preserved in places like the famous Recoletta Cemetery.
