| Buenos Aires is one of the most intriguing cities in the world... stylish yet warm, modern with 16-lane super roads yet packed with stunning old-world architecture, bustling yet slow-paced. Perhaps think of a hybrid mix of London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona, then add a sprinkle of what you've seen in other South American cities, and finally a pinch of individualism and you're getting close - it really is a stunning city that you just won't want to leave.
BA has a thriving social scene... a great selection of restaurants, stylish bars, great clubs - enough to rival pretty much every major city in the globe. It also has a myriad of different 'barrios', many with their own unique characters. You'll never see it all in a visit... but you'll have great fun trying.
Not to be missed:
- Palermo for its 'hip' scene. If you like your bars and restaurants, you might not actually leave Palermo all holiday! - Recoleta for its beautiful parks, its boutiques - and the stunning cemetery, full of opulent tombs and mausoleums, with stray cats wandering in and out of the crypts... very atmospheric. - San Telmo for its Tango shows, cobbled lanes, antiques and general laidback atmosphere - the Microcentro for the 'must see' sights such as the Casa Rosada (famous, amongst other things, as the building from which Evita addressed the people) - La Boca for its colourfully painted houses and crafts - Puerto Madero to see this transformed part of the city with its swanky flats, converted warehouses and upmarket restaurants - Av 9 de Julio... just because this street in the centre of Buenos Aires really does have 16 lanes!
Most importantly though, just go with the flow and enjoy the great company of the warm 'Portenos' (those that live in Buenos Aires - 'people of the port'). You'll soon get swept up in the general vibe of the place and be making a mental note that you absolutely must come back.

Seek-R submitted a review on 2008-09-13 16:11... Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires...... such a great and fabulous city! I just want to make my personal contribution from a gay perspective of the city. Those gay traveleres coming to BA will find a charming and open minded spot in South America. The city is one of the most gay friendly cities in the world with many bars, clubs, gay oriented hotels and handsome people everywhere. Portenios (as they call residents of BA) are friendly and open to help you with directions and recommendations. The city took a step ahead with gay rights and recognise same sex unions and grants nationwide same-sex couples, the right to claim their deceased partners' pensions. I had a great time in the land of gauchos enhanced by 2 Portenios Two young professionals organising activities in the city for gay travelers, providing an excellent service. They make you experince the city from a very local perspective sharing their passion for the place they live and knowledge of the city. Do not miss the gay gaucho night and a visit to tigre by train. I hope this short contribution can be of help to everyone coming to Buenos Aires as it was for me reading reports before my trip. | |
