Armenia may not be the top tourist destination in the globe but it has plenty to offer. Whether or not you consider yourself Armenian Orthodox, you have to marvel at the beauty of Armenia's churches. Echmiadzin is absolutely breathtaking and as is the amount of history Armenia has to offer. Yerevan offers a heavily Russian influenced city with maze-like avenues to wander.

But, perhaps Armenia's most incredible draw is seen once you leave Yerevan. Drive a few hours south to see the famed Mount Ararat, which is virtually the national symbol of Armenia and ironically located across the Turkish border. Lake Sevan is beautiful and yet uninhabited. It's worth taking some time to explore the region and hike some of the many trails.

Armenian culture is less than fascinating but you'll enjoy good Mediterranean food and plenty of pork. But bring your pocket dictionary, that is unless you speak Armenian or Russian. It's not the easiest place to navigate on your own. For anyone of Armenian descent, it's a return home you must take.

you've  been to armenia too!!?  are you armenian?  it's an awesome country and i loved the former soviet republic feel.  i have never experienced anything like it.  however, if you don't speak the language.... or the default- russian, traveling around is pretty tough outside (and inside) of yerevan, the capital city.  interesting food- lots of friday pork and levan bread.  that was okay.  exceptional red tea though, as i remember.  i agree, lake sevan, is picturesque.  definitely recommend staying at the three tufenkian hotels around the country.
