Introduction to Singapore
At a Buddhist temple near the city center, a young man in blue jeans earnestly lit a bunch of incense. Clutching it in both hands, he ritually waved it so the fragrant steam sifted through the air. Carefully placing the incense in the requisite containers, he bowed and backed away. He immediately grabbed his vibrating cell phone and began speaking animatedly in English.
That combination of old, resonating faith and quick modernity epitomizes Singapore. A tiny city-state—and former British colony—Singapore officially declared its independence from Malaysia in 1965. With a population of over four million crammed into 270 square miles, Singapore is one of the most densely populated (and one of the smallest) countries in the world.
The country is full of multinational corporations, hard-working people, and surprises. Some call it boring, a plasticine imitation of a
real
Asian city. Those who know it understand that you have to scratch its shiny surface to get a sense of the real Singapore. So let’s get started. We can travel from its glittering version of Fifth Avenue—Orchard Road—to the more gritty Arab Street. And there are surprises to be had along the way.
